At the same time, the Trump administration has asked Congress for <a class=\"js-itid-click\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2026\/07\/21\/red-sea-blockade-threatens-new-front-us-iran-war\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2026\/07\/21\/red-sea-blockade-threatens-new-front-us-iran-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tens of billions of dollars<\/a> in funding to offset costs incurred by the Iran war and to replenish supplies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"X5TT4BUW7FHVHLDTGYV42MWY7I\" data-el=\"text\" data-scroll-pos=\"8\" data-scroll-measured=\"true\">As The Post reported last week, Trump <a class=\"js-itid-click\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2026\/08\/05\/trump-hegseth-clashed-camp-david-over-iran-missile-depletion-concerns\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2026\/08\/05\/trump-hegseth-clashed-camp-david-over-iran-missile-depletion-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">confronted Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth<\/a> about the state of the U.S. stockpile. The encounter occurred July 31, on the sidelines of a Cabinet meeting at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"CHD3JRD6CFHBDCDJ73KOIS3N7U\" data-el=\"text\" data-scroll-pos=\"9\" data-scroll-measured=\"true\">The shortages have appeared to embolden Iran, which has intensified its demands for control of the Strait of Hormuz and reparations for damage the country has sustained since Trump ordered the start of hostilities on Feb. 28.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"7ECZHNCLNFCFPE5KZRGDCH4PX4\" data-el=\"text\" data-scroll-pos=\"10\" data-scroll-measured=\"true\">There were approximately 185 Reapers in the U.S. military fleet \u2014 165 in the Air Force and 20 in the Marine Corps<b> <\/b>\u2014<b> <\/b>before the conflict began, according to public budget data and the services.<b> <\/b>That figure does not include Reapers operated by U.S. intelligence agencies.<b> <\/b>To date, none of the Marines\u2019 Reapers have been lost, a spokesman, Lt. Col. Joshua Benson, said in a statement. Those operate primarily in the Asia-Pacific.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"4LOZELVZ2BBBJEBZ26OZMRPBXY\" data-el=\"text\" data-scroll-pos=\"11\" data-scroll-measured=\"true\">In May, Lt. Gen. Even if Congress approves the funding, it will be years before stockpiles depleted by the conflict in Iran and the munitions sent to Ukraine are reconstituted.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body type-text\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"UGDZ3CLX4FAKTNGJSMYW2BFHUM\" data-el=\"text\" data-scroll-pos=\"12\" data-scroll-measured=\"true\">Hegseth told the Senate in July that the Pentagon would have to curtail military trainings without a quick infusion of additional funding as the Iran war strains the defense budget.
