USIP employees <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2025\/03\/29\/doge-usip-peace-institute-fired\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">told<\/a>\u00a0<em>The Washington Post<\/em> that between 200 and 300 people had been fired, which is nearly all of the institute\u2019s headquarters staff.<\/p>\n<p>The reported firings come after President Donald Trump signed an executive order in February aimed at dismantling the USIP, which is a congressionally funded organization. The Trump administration has been working to freeze the organization\u2019s funding and replace its board.<\/p>\n<p>USIP was created by Congress in 1984 under former President Ronald Reagan and was formally established as \u201can independent, nonprofit corporation,\u201d according to CBS News. The USIP has a $55 million budget and a purported mission to promote conflict resolution and prevent conflict across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaxpayers don\u2019t want to spend $50 million per year on a publicly-funded \u2018research institute\u2019 that has failed to deliver peace,\u201d\u00a0White House press deputy secretary Anna Kelly told the outlet on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a9d-pre\">\u201cPresident Trump ended the era of forever wars and established peace in his first term, and he is carrying out his mandate to eliminate bloat and save taxpayer dollars,\u201d Kelly continued.<\/p>\n<p>Fired employees were notified of their termination by email for a USIP email address, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDear [Employee], this letter is to inform you of a change in your employment status with United State Institute of Peace (sic),\u201d a copy of an email obtained by the outlet reads. \u201cEffective March 28, 2025, your employment with us will conclude.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The firings come after a federal judge earlier this month declined to grant a temporary restraining order to block DOGE from accessing USIP.
